Pine Needle Basket Making : May 10th 2025 FULLY BOOKED
New for 2025 !! We have a big pine tree in the workshop courtyard that we planted a few years ago - affectionally know as Dougal ( we one had it as a small living tree one Christmas at home) It sheds thousands of its needles every autumn. We have used them in various small products over the years. Well now we've found another use with a great new tutor.
The history of pine needle baskets goes back eons. Many local Native American tribes continue their legacy of creating beautiful baskets out of the pine needles that adorn the ground in their rusty blankets in autumn. Traditionally, these baskets were tied together with animal sinew or strong plant fibres (like those from nettle.) Today, you can make your very own beautiful basket out of nothing more than our pine needles, strong waxed linen thread, a large dull needle for sewing.
This course is led by Karla Pearce a locally based basket maker.
All courses are run from our Buy Design Gallery garden courtyard. It was the old Dairy and Milking yard for the estate farm in years past. Working outside and under cover makes it a great setting and as a space for learning and enjoyment.
We ask all participants to bring lunch, warm working clothes and strong sensible footwear. We gather up at 9.30 for a cuppa, meet the others and get started by 10, working through til about 5. If you need suggestions for accommodation see here .
