Make a Shrink Pot
A shrink pot is made by hollowing out a fresh (green) log with a base made by fitting a dry piece of wood into a groove cut around the inside. As the log dries it shrinks onto the base making a really tight fit. Centuries ago shrink pots were used as storage jars. They were replaced by wooden barrels and inevitably plastic has taken over. Since the 1970s, the rejuvenated craft culture in Scandinavia has promoted the carving of shrink pots again.
You will learn the carving skills needed to make your pot safely using sharp tools.
All tools and materials are provided.
All courses are run from our Buy Design Gallery garden courtyard. It was the old Dairy and Milking yard for the estate farm in years past. Working outside and under cover makes it a great setting and as a space for learning and enjoyment.
We ask all participants to bring lunch, warm working clothes and strong sensible footwear. We gather up at 9.30 for a cuppa, meet the others and get started by 10, working through til about 5. If you need suggestions for accommodation see here.
