This is a piece of Scottish alder bark that has been dried and blackened. White chalk dots follow a surface grain on the gnarly texture of the trees skin. This tree had floated down the storm swollen river near the workshop a few years back. I used the wood to make furniture and the bark that was remaining made into these primitive paintings.
