Big Tree Society is delighted to be hosting a day of basket making this year with Anna Liebmann.
Anna Liebmann is a professional basketmaker living and working in Portobello, Edinburgh. She teaches extensively in the city and beyond. She was drawn to basketmaking when her children were tiny, whilst living and working at an environmental project in rural Lanarkshire where she became aware of the versatility of willow and was inspired by its zero carbon footprint. She still returns there regularly to harvest her willow.
For the last few years Anna has been on the committee of the Scottish Basketmaker’s Circle, and is currently their newsletter editor.
Come and learn how to make your very own willow basket.Traditional willow basketry course covering all the techniques needed to produce your own first basket, which you can take home at the end of the day. Skills taught will include: pairing, staking up, upsetting, waling, randing, and trac border.
Suitable for beginners or as a refresher if you've done some weaving before.
All courses are run from our Buy Design Gallery garden courtyard. It was the old Dairy and Milking yard for the estate farm in years past. Working outside and under cover makes it a great setting and as a space for learning and enjoyment.
We ask all participants to bring lunch, warm working clothes and strong sensible footwear. We gather up at 9.30 for a cuppa, meet the others and get started by 10, working through til about 5. If you need suggestions for accommodation see here.
